Fathers Day, 6/17/2012...
Good Afternoon to Everyone,
I hope each of you that have a husband or Dad alive are having a great day. My son in law had so much time off for his daughter's promotion ceremony that he is alone today as he is on a job that keeps him out of town.
The picture above is of the Carson House in Eureka, CA. It is the former home of a lumber baron built back in the 1800's if memory serves me correctly!! That may be iffy!!! :-) It an incredibly beautiful building kept in excellent repair as it is now a private club that was "men only". I think they finally had to give in to allow women to be members.
I'm feeling a bit better from the trip & the heat! I think it has mostly been the heat doing me in, especially yesterday! The temperature reached 105 here in Healdsburg. Thankfully today is only suppose to be in the mid 90's. I just checked the paper which says a high of 88 today but I think it will be warmer. Glad for any cooler temps!! I had trouble keeping my eyes open yesterday so I had a lot of dozing off which resulted in short naps!!!
I went back to read all the posts I missed but did not keep notes! Too much work! Glad I was able to post a couple of times, read messages & keep up at least a part of the trip..
Sandi, sorry there is so much going on not only at work but home also. I hope for your sake it calms down some. Keep us posted on the "accredited" issue at work. My daughter that works at the hospital has to keep all her certifications up to date. Let us know if Mike wants the Kindle Fire. I'm thinking about getting that as my tablet but want to wait until the update comes out. People at both Best Buy & Staples say one is due but I have no idea when. Sandi, vent anytime you please. Everyone else also. It is so nice to have a place where we can voice our frustrations without judgement from others.
I've enjoyed all the "name" stories. That has been pretty lacking in my family except for the name Lawrence on Mom's side. My grandfather was Ruben Lawrence which led to several of the male cousins having that middle name. My parents used Lawrence as a first name for a baby boy that only survived for about an hour after birth. Apparently his lungs were not fully developed & they lacked the medical knowledge at that time to save him. It was a difficult time for my parents. I was 10 or 11, I think. They did have another child, my youngest brother Neil born when I was 12. He is the one I spent the day with on my trip. My other brother has nothing to do with the family any more. His loss!
Cady, sounds like your kids are keeping busy for the summer. I hope that Maggie enjoyed her sleep away. Sounds fun. Is it camping or do they stay in cabins? I agree Harry & David products tend to be pricey. The night they did "Girls Night" there was 20% off everything even sale items. I got a couple of things but had to watch the spending on this trip as usual. When I worked in the insurance office a few years ago we always got a lot of gift baskets, boxes of candy, etc., Harry & David gift baskets were one of the more popular ones especially if we got fruit as all the sweets get to be to much after awhile.
I only managed to read one whole book while on my trip! The book is an anthology published by Harlequin in 2003 called Paris or Bust!, authors in the book are Kate Hoffmann, Jacqueline Diamond & Jill Shalvis. The middle story "Daddy Come Lately" fits our dad theme for June. I enjoyed it. The publisher for a contest for a trip to Paris visits an ex-girlfriend that is a finalist for the trip. He was not given a chance to approve the selection as a secretary with no authority took "initiative" picked the finalists & posted the list on the website! Yes, she found out that is not the type of initiative she should have taken. As a result of his high school sweetheart being one of the names on the list he goes back home to Texas to see her. He gets a big surprise when he finds out he has twin sons as a result of their former relationship. He was never told about the pregnancy because she did not want to keep him from his dream of publishing a magazine about family travel. This was an enjoyable short story as he stepped up to the plate with his boys & yes, there was a HEA! My favorite ending!!
I'm going to stop for now as it is past lunchtime & I don't want to drag this out to be any longer! I'll come back to add more about the trip & catch you up on me!!
Here is a picture that seems very inviting in our hot weather. The picture below was taken at a rest stop near the little coastal town of Trinidad, CA. It is a beautiful setting for such an ordinary necessity when traveling! I always stop here partly because it is so beautiful but mostly because it is the last easy stop for a "bathroom break" before I get to my friend Pat's place.
Happy reading,
Donna M
